The Friends of the Glen Rock Arboretum
The Friends of the Glen Rock Arboretum are committed to preserving, developing
and insuring the continued existence of the Glen Rock Arboretum. They are
dedicated to the preservation and conservation of plants as well as providing a
natural haven for birds, small fish, other amphibians and animals, thus protecting
our botanical heritage.
Fund raising by selling engraved pavers and the annual September plant sale has
enabled FOTA to purchase and install the antique Gazebo that is the site of many
celebrations, a decorative fountain and other enhancements. A pair of hand carved
granite/stone ducks welcome visitors at the north entrance. Memorial gifts of
benches, the distinctive wrought iron gate at the Doremus Avenue entrance, a
drinking fountain, a marble sun dial with an original design bronze pointer, plants,
trees, and other garden ornaments have added to the serene setting. The pond
aerators and the shed for tools and equipment were contributed by the Borough.
The local Jaycee chapter has the pond stocked with fish each spring and a town
wide fishing derby for children is held in June; in spring, they also sponsor an Easter
egg candy hunt for young children. Many adults, children, and classes from
pre-school through high school, visit the Arboretum through-out the year to study.
The eleven acre Arboretum is managed and maintained by volunteers. In 2003, the
Friends of the Arboretum formed an alliance with Bergen Community College.
Students enrolled in BCC horticulture classes can fulfill their required volunteer and
out door lab work at the arboretum. Local groups from schools, Girl Scouts and Boy
Scouts do individual volunteer projects.
The park is open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week
